What you need:
-a cardboard tube (like a paper towel tube, or wrapping paper tube)
-two circles cut from heavy paper (like construction paper or a brown paper bag), double the size of the ends of the tube
-two rubber bands or tape
-a few pipe cleaners
-filling for the stick (beans, rice, popcorn kernels, or anything small that will pass through the tube. Try different fillings to get different sounds!)
-decorations for your stick. Use crayons, markers, stickers, pom poms, or anything else fun you have on hand
Take one of the paper circles and fold it around one end of the tube. Use an elastic band or tape to securely attach it.
Wrap the pipe cleaners lightly around your finger to make spirals.
Push several pipe cleaners gently into the tube. If it feels like you have to force them, pull the pipe cleaners a bit to straighten them and try again.
Pour in the filling. Try to get it into the tube and not all over the floor. 😀
Use the second paper circle to cover the other end of the tube. Secure it with the rubber band or tape.
Decorate your rainstick. Make it as elaborate or as simple as you like. Get creative!
Make it rain by slowly turning the stick upside down and back again. The filling moving through the pipe cleaners from one end of the tube to the other makes a sound like falling rain.
